SCEE to electrify Rio Tinto’s Gudai-Darri iron ore mine

Southern Cross Electrical Engineering is to perform plant electrical and instrumentation works at the Rio Tinto-owned Gudai-Darri (formerly known as Koodaideri) iron ore mine site in Western Australia as part of a contract valued at over A$65 million ($48 million).

The agreement will see SCEE mobilise to the Pilbara site in late 2020, with completion of work planned for December 2021.

SCEE Managing Director, Graeme Dunn, said: “We are pleased to secure this significant award with such a longstanding and valued client as Rio Tinto for whom we have undertaken many successful projects in the Pilbara. This further boosts our already strong order book and will provide a solid base of construction work in the resources sector into the 2022 financial year.”

Earlier this month, Rio opened Western Australia’s newest airport at the $2.6 billion Gudai-Darri Stage 1 iron ore project (see photo, credit: Rio Tinto). The greenfield mine development, around 35 km northwest of the Yandicoogina mine in the East Pilbara mining region, will initially be developed as a nominal 43 Mt/y high-grade, dry processing operation, with start-up expected in early 2022.

SCEE on board Gove alumina refinery rehabilitation project

Southern Cross Electrical Engineering Ltd is to help Rio Tinto with rehabilitation works at its mothballed Gove alumina refinery, in the Northern Territory of Australia.

The works, part of a contract valued at more than A$18 million ($12 million), include the isolation and re-routing of electrical and hydraulic services to the refinery. Mobilisation is expected to commence in the March quarter with completion by March 2021.

The refinery, on the Gove Peninsula in North East Arnhem Land, was put on care and maintenance in 2013 with Rio since making the decision to permanently close the refinery.

SCEE Managing Director, Graeme Dunn, said: “We are pleased to secure another significant award in the resources sector, following closely on from our announcements of a number of new resources projects in December 2019.” These projects include a contract to work on the Kemerton lithium hydroxide processing plant near Bunbury, Western Australia.

SCEE to work on Kemerton lithium hydroxide facility

Southern Cross Electrical Engineering (SCEE) says it has been awarded the electrical and instrumentation (E&I) works contract at the new Kemerton lithium hydroxide processing plant near Bunbury, Western Australia.

The Kemerton processing plant, owned 60% by Albemarle Corp through the MARBL lithium joint venture, will initially comprise of two trains, each with a production capacity of 25,000 t/y of lithium hydroxide. Production is scheduled to commence in 2021.

The award for SCEE is to deliver the full E&I scope for both the hydromet and pyromet sections of the plant with an approximate value of A$65 million ($44.8 million).

Engineering company Monadelphous Group is delivering the pyromet structural, mechanical and piping package of work, as well as associated piping fabrication for the plant.

SCEE’s work is due to commence around the end of the March quarter of 2020 and is due for completion in May 2021.

CITIC Pacific awards more electrical work to SCEE

Southern Cross Electrical Engineering (SCEE) has received more work at CITIC Pacific Mining’s Sino Iron project in Western Australia, being awarded an electrical maintenance services contract over a three-year term.

The award extends the company’s long-standing relationship with CITIC Pacific on the iron ore operation. In 2014, it won around A$80 million of electrical and instrumentation work across process lines three to six. This came after the company was initially contracted for work on the first concentrator area in 2011.

The latest contract award comes amid a flurry of activity for the electrical, instrumentation, communication and maintenance services company where it has secured A$50 million of contract awards in the commercial sector and framework agreements in both resources and telecommunications.

SCEE Managing Director Graeme Dunn said: “Combined with our announcement of the Westconnex contract last week, this range of projects demonstrates the sectoral and geographic diversity of the group with awards in four of the five sectors in which we operate and in the majority of the states and territories of Australia.”
