Metso looks to boost Chile delivery performance and customer service with new service centre

Metso has opened a new state-of-the-art distribution centre in Vina del Mar, Chile, to, it says, further improve its delivery performance and customer service.

The new centre will replace the unit that served the area. The modern centre will considerably increase Metso’s capability to deliver equipment, spare and wear parts and components, and will further strengthen the distribution and logistics network in Chile. The inauguration ceremony was held on June 6, 2024.

Eduardo Nilo, President, South America market area, Metso, said: “Our goal is to continuously improve customer satisfaction in all our activities and meet our customers’ expectations by providing market-leading solutions. Our target is to provide on-time delivery and increased service availability to ensure efficient and sustainable customer operations. The new distribution centre has a significantly larger storage capacity than our previous warehouse and it will strengthen the availability of critical spare and wear parts close to our customers in Chile and other countries in South America.”

The distribution centre is an example of how Metso can support the mining industry in moving towards the most advanced and sustainable practices, the OEM says. The facility operates primarily on renewable energy and uses sustainable packaging solutions, including returnable packaging and lighter plywood alternatives. Additionally, fully-electric vehicles and machinery complement this facility.

The distribution centre is located close to Metso operations in Concón, where the company has a modern rubber and Poly-Met factory and the recently inaugurated, unique circularity recycling solution for Megaliner™, Poly-Met™ and rubber liners.

Sami Takaluoma, President, Services business area, Metso, added: “The new distribution centre is Metso’s latest strategic investment for an important customer market and a concrete step towards our strategic target to become the preferred service provider in our industry. Our installed base in Chile and throughout South America is strong and the modern centre will strengthen our competitiveness as a provider of long-term service contracts.”

The new centre is operated by an external vendor, providing warehousing and efficient distributor support for Metso and its customers in the region.

Markku Eronen, Senior Vice President, Global Logistics Operations, Metso, said: “An efficient and optimised distribution centre network will increase availability, improve customer service and decrease CO2 emissions. We have distribution centres around the world, located close to customers utilising efficient and sustainable logistics routes. Our distribution centre strategy is based on utilising strong partners who have recognised global capabilities in providing competitive warehouse services. Their expertise enables us to further develop our customer service with maximum optimised reliability, safety and operative transparency.”

Metso Outotec breaks ground on new Karratha service centre

Metso Outotec has celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony of the company’s biggest service centre globally to be built in Karratha, Western Australia.

The investment, which was announced in November 2021, will result in a centre offering comprehensive maintenance and repair services for mining and aggregates customers in the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions, the company said.

Located in one of the world’s largest mining regions, the centre offers increased productivity and shorter lead times as well as substantial environmental advantages due to shorter transportation journey, according to Metso Outotec.

The new service centre’s lot size is over 35,000 sq.m, with a 5,000 sq.m workshop and a total of 18,000 sq.m of storage space.

The total investment value is around €32 million ($32 million), including the purchase of the land, assets and construction of the service centre. It is expected to be operational during the December quarter of 2023.

Martin Karlsson, Senior Vice President, Professional Services, Metso Outotec, said: “This is a great day for Metso Outotec and our customers. Reaching this milestone means that the construction work on the site is proceeding after a thorough planning phase. The service centre is an expansion to our footprint and an important strategic investment in supporting our customers. The strong operational support and leading process knowledge we provide, will help our customers to meet their targets.”

The centre will be equipped to repair and refurbish, for example, large mining crushers, grinding mills, screens and car dumpers. Further, it will act as a base for field services, hold inventory for critical wear and spare parts, as well as providing a customer training facility.

Stuart Sneyd, President, Asia Pacific market area, Metso Outotec, said: “By investing in this state-of-the-art service centre, we are demonstrating our long-term commitment to the Pilbara Region and the communities there. We can offer shorter lead times, and environmentally efficient service and delivery capabilities. The functionalities of the building have been carefully designed, and we are able to support our customers with a comprehensive service and repairs capability for all their needs.”

Metso Outotec has, today, 140 service centres globally, over 3,000 field services professionals and additional support resources close to customer operations.

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions bolsters Argentina service offering

To reduce response times, increase service quality and be closer to key mining clients, Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is decentralising its workshop in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to invest in a service centre in Caleta Olivia in the Province of Santa Cruz.

The maintenance and repair workshop for mining equipment, which opened in July, is strategically located and equipped with advanced systems such as South America’s first test bench for transmissions, axles and converters, according to Sandvik. It not only allows for the equipment to rotate, but can also take a heavy load, helping to guarantee reliability and quality of repairs.

“The objective of the Sandvik service centre in Caleta Olivia is to deliver results with high quality standards, in a timely manner,” Sebastián Issel, Country Manager of Sandvik Argentina SA, said. “To do this, we are strongly committed to the strategic development of local suppliers.”

The workshop entails a reception area, a 1,775-sq.m service area for repairs (featuring capacity for four service teams), a specific area for component repairs, training rooms and offices. The workshop is designed to carry out repairs of all types of components and equipment that Sandvik currently has in service in Argentina, including surface and underground drills and underground trucks and loaders.

The new facilities will also serve to complement training connected to mine sites for Sandvik technicians and customer representatives alike, Sandvik said.

As a supplier to many key mining operators in the southern region of Argentina, Sandvik says it sees the opening of the new service centre as an important move to provide a more localised service offering. The opening of the Caleta Olivia workshop represents a distribution point and satellite to have a faster response when a customer needs a specific component or spare part, it said. Its location in Caleta Olivia allows for less travel and smooth shift changes for service technicians.

Sandvik’s presence in key mining and construction provinces in Argentina delivers, the company says, a strategic combination for customers in the area, with the headquarters located in San Justo and the facilities in Caleta Olivia serving as the distribution and repair centre in the region.
