Aus Tin kicks off Granville East mining with high-grade block

Aus Tin Mining says tin mining has commenced at its Granville East mine in Tasmania, Australia.

Run of mine material from the first mining block – estimated to total some 430 t – will be transported to the processing plant enabling plant feed to transition from low‐grade stockpiles to high‐grade mine material, Aus Tin said.

The first mining block is located at the southern end of the open pit and was extracted from the hangingwall shale that overlies the cassiterite-magnetite skarn, Aus Tin said.

Assay results from blasthole samples collected for grade control purposes have confirmed the high‐grade mineralisation at Granville East, Aus Tin said. These included intersections of 4 m at 6.56% Sn and 4 m at 4.34% Sn.

Aus Tin CEO, Peter Williams, said: “We are delighted to have achieved this major milestone as we transition to Level 2 operations and will now move to processing this material. We are particularly delighted with the grade of the first block, which across eight holes averaged 2.1% Sn and is more typical of underground mines.”

Aus Tin said it has been seeking to directly procure certain services contracted to its civil and mining contractor.

“To minimise further delays to the operations, the company has now assumed additional components of the contract, including blasting services and fuel supply,” Aus Tin said. “Furthermore, the company has removed the crushing component of the contract and is currently in discussions with alternative parties as well as examining capacity for utilising surplus equipment at the processing plant.”

Aus Tin shipped its first tin concentrate from Granville back in 2017, and has been working on developing a “Level 2” operation at East Granville at the same time.

ABx’s Bald Hill bauxite hits the road

Australian Bauxite (ABx) has begun mining and screening operations at its Bald Hill operation near Campbell Town, northern Tasmania, Australia, as it prepares for the next cargo of seaborne cement-grade bauxite to its customer’s specifications.

The company said it has worked with the customer in question over the past four months to achieve the optimum product specifications. Back in December, it said it had secured an order for a 30,000 t shipment of seaborne cement-grade product, which was due to be loaded in early March.

In the meantime, ABx has awarded a contract for mining, processing and blending at Bald Hill to Hazell Bros contractors. The company has also commenced contract negotiations for transporting the product to the Bell Bay port.

The company said: “ABx has long-standing relationships with experienced contractors that are well known for meeting the strict tonnage-specification targets and complying with community and landholder requirements.”

At the port, Abx has contracted QUBE Logistics at Bell Bay for the stevedoring services and stockpiling arrangements, in conjunction with TasPorts. Monson Shipping has provided Shipping Agents services and Briar Maritime have provided independent ship surveys to date.

In addition to the cement-grade produce ABx is producing, it has also had success producing and selling fertiliser-grade material.

Loading of this material at its clean loadout facility recommenced on January 29, with sales expected to continue throughout the year. These sales are growing as the fertiliser product achieves wider market approval, ABx said.

“The customer and ABx worked together on developing this product which ABx believes has potential for other high-value markets,” the company said, adding that it produces an activated granule with potential to adsorb chemicals.

NQ Minerals in for ‘transformational year’ after completing Hellyer commissioning

London-listed NQ Minerals has completed commissioning of the Hellyer processing plant, in Tasmania, Australia, with production during the December quarter reaching 3,991 t of lead, 1,537 t of zinc, and 4,291 t of pyrite.

This output realised approximately £3.2 million ($4.1 million) in sales, according to NQ Minerals.

“The company is now consistently producing all three concentrates with sales occurring on a weekly basis,” NQ Minerals said.

Held within four separate areas, the Hellyer tailings total a JORC-compliant resource of 9.5 Mt, hosting gold at 2.61 g/t Au for 796,000 oz, silver at 104 g/t Ag for 32 Moz Ag, lead at 3.03% Pb for 287,800 t and zinc at 2.5% Zn for 237,900 t. In addition to these tailings, the Hellyer mine assets include a large pre-existing mill facility and full supporting infrastructure, including a direct rail line to port.

NQ Minerals previously agreed two separate offtake agreements with Traxys for Hellyer’s products, where the trading company will receive all of the precious metals and lead and zinc produced over the first five years.

Brian Stockbridge, Chairman of NQ Minerals, said: “With commissioning substantially complete, NQ is now a producer. Having completed the acquisition and refurbishment of Hellyer over the prior two years, the culmination of management’s efforts will make 2019 a transformational year for the company. With the change in status to a producer, we believe there is substantial potential to unlock shareholder value.”
